Your name is already part of your online identity. But when
someone searches for you, what can they actually learn about your work, skills, projects, or services?A simple personal website gives you one place to introduce yourself and direct people to the information that matters. You can share it with potential employers, clients, collaborators, customers, classmates, or anyone who wants to learn more about you.
You do not need to know how to code or pay a developer to get started.
In this guide, you will learn how to use Carrd to create and publish a simple one-page personal or professional website, using its free plan.
What is Carrd?
Carrd is a website builder designed for simple, responsive, one-page websites. You can use it to create a personal profile, portfolio introduction, project page, service overview, or landing page.
Instead of building a complex website with many separate pages, you arrange the information you want visitors to see on one page.
A basic personal website might contain:
- Your name and professional headline.
- A short introduction.
- Your skills, services, or selected projects.
- Links to your work and professional profiles.
- A way for interested people to contact you.
Carrd provides templates and a visual editor, so you can build a page without writing website code.
What you need before starting
Prepare these items first:
- A clear purpose: Decide whether the page will introduce you professionally, showcase projects, promote a service, or represent a personal initiative.
- A short biography: Write two or three sentences explaining who you are and what you do.
- A few useful links: These might include a portfolio, LinkedIn profile, GitHub account, published work, or business page.
- A suitable photo, if you want one: Use an image you have permission to publish. A photograph is optional.
- An email address: Use a professional contact address if you want people to reach you.
You can begin without buying a domain name, creating a logo, or preparing elaborate graphics.
Step 1: Open Carrd and choose a starting point
Visit carrd.com.
Select Choose a Starting Point and explore the available templates. You can start with a template or choose a blank page if you want to arrange everything yourself.
For your first website, choose a simple design that makes your name, introduction, and important links easy to find.
Avoid choosing a complicated design simply because it looks impressive. A straightforward page with useful information is often more effective than a crowded page with decorative elements.
Create an account or sign in when prompted so you can save and publish your work.
Step 2: Write the content before designing the page
A common mistake is spending too much time adjusting colours and layouts before deciding what the website should communicate.
Start with the words.
For example, a freelancer might write:
Name: Chika Okafor
Headline: Freelance Writer | Research and Content Development
Introduction: I help small businesses and organisations turn complex ideas into clear, useful content. My interests include technology, research, and digital communication.
Selected work: Add links to two or three relevant projects.
Contact: Provide a professional email address or a link to a suitable contact platform.
This is only an example. Replace it with accurate information about yourself.
If you are a student, you can highlight your field of study, projects, skills, and interests. If you are seeking employment, focus on relevant experience and evidence of your abilities. If you run a small business, explain what you offer and who it helps.
Be specific. “I am passionate about success” tells visitors very little. “I design websites for small businesses” gives them a clearer understanding of your work.
Step 3: Customise the page in the editor
Use Carrd's visual editor to replace the template's sample content with your own.
Select an element to edit its text, appearance, or settings. Use the editor's available controls to add and arrange elements such as text, images, buttons, and links.
A useful order for a personal website is:
- Introduction: Your name and what you do.
- About: A short, relevant biography.
- Work or services: A few projects, skills, or offerings.
- Links: Direct visitors to your professional profiles or published work.
- Contact: Tell visitors how to reach you, if appropriate.
Keep paragraphs short and use clear headings. Someone visiting on a phone should be able to understand your page without having to work through long blocks of text.
You do not need to include every detail of your life or career. Choose information that supports the purpose of the website.
Step 4: Make the page easy to use
Before publishing, review the page as if you were a stranger seeing it for the first time.
Ask yourself:
- Can visitors quickly understand who I am?
- Is it clear what I do or what I am offering?
- Do my links work and lead to the correct destinations?
- Is the text readable on a phone?
- Is there a clear next step for someone interested in my work?
Use descriptive button labels. For example, “View My Portfolio” is more informative than “Click Here.”
If you include a contact link, make sure it opens the correct destination. Do not publish placeholder links that lead nowhere.
You can keep the design simple. Consistent headings, readable text, adequate spacing, and a small number of useful links are enough for a strong first version.
Step 5: Publish your website for free
When you are ready to make the page public, select Publish in the editor.
Carrd's publishing interface allows you to configure details such as the site's title and description. Its official title and description guide explains how to set or update these details.
Enter a clear title, such as:
Chika Okafor | Writer and Researcher
Write a short description that accurately explains the page.
Next, choose the free Carrd-hosted address option if you are using the Basic plan. Select an available site address and follow the prompts to publish.
Your website address will use a Carrd-hosted domain rather than a domain name you purchased yourself.
Carrd's official website currently advertises up to three free sites per account, with its core features available on the free plan. See Carrd's official site for the current offer.
Once publishing is complete, open the public address to confirm that the website is accessible.
Step 6: Test the published page
Do not assume the website is finished simply because the editor looks correct.
Open the public link and test it.
Check that:
- Your name and introduction display correctly.
- The text and images fit the screen.
- Every button and link opens the intended destination.
- Your contact details are correct.
- There is no leftover sample text from the template.
- The page looks reasonable on a phone as well as a larger screen.
If possible, ask someone you trust to review the page and tell you what they understand about your work after looking at it.
Make corrections in Carrd and publish the changes again when necessary.
Do you need a paid plan or a custom domain?
Not necessarily.
For a first personal profile, the free plan may be sufficient. A Carrd-hosted address lets you publish without purchasing a separate domain or configuring DNS records.
A custom domain, such as yourname.com, can make the address more distinctive. However, Carrd's official documentation states that publishing to a custom domain requires Pro Standard or higher, and you must register the domain separately before connecting it.
As listed in Carrd's official plan documentation, the plans checked on 14 October 2026 include:
- Basic: Free, with core features and up to three sites.
- Pro Lite: US$9 per year.
- Pro Standard: US$19 per year, including custom-domain publishing and additional features.
Prices and features can change, so check the official plan page before paying. The cost of registering a custom domain is separate from the Carrd subscription.
My recommendation is simple: build the first version for free. Upgrade only when you have a specific need for a custom domain, contact forms, analytics, or another paid feature.
Common problems and how to address them
The published website does not show my latest changes.
You may be viewing a cached version. Carrd's building troubleshooting guide recommends refreshing the page or clearing the browser cache when older content continues to appear.
Publishing fails.
Check that you are still signed in and that the page does not contain unfinished elements. If the problem continues, consult Carrd's official troubleshooting guide for possible causes and solutions.
My website is not appearing in search results.
Publishing a page does not guarantee that search engines will discover or display it immediately. Share the link directly while you continue improving the page. A website's appearance in search results depends on factors beyond simply publishing it.
I want to use my own domain, but the website will not connect.
Custom-domain publishing requires a paid plan and a registered domain. Carrd provides the necessary DNS instructions in its custom-domain setup guide. Follow those instructions carefully; incorrect DNS records can prevent the website from loading properly.
Protect your privacy and reputation
A personal website is public-facing, so think carefully about the information you publish.
- Do not publish your home address, private identification numbers, or other sensitive personal information.
- Avoid displaying a personal phone number unless you deliberately want visitors to have it.
- Use photographs, text, and other materials you own or have permission to use.
- Check every external link before publishing.
- Keep claims about your qualifications, services, and experience accurate.
- Review the page periodically and remove information that is outdated or no longer appropriate.
Remember that a public webpage can be copied, shared, or captured in screenshots. Removing information later does not guarantee that every copy will disappear.
Your practical exercise
Create a first version of your own one-page website.
You do not need to finish everything today. Start with the essentials:
- [ ] Choose a clear purpose for the page.
- [ ] Write your name, headline, and short introduction.
- [ ] Add two useful links or examples of your work.
- [ ] Choose a simple template and customise it.
- [ ] Publish using the free Carrd-hosted address.
- [ ] Test the public link on your phone.
- [ ] Ask someone to review the page and improve it based on their feedback.
When the page is ready, place the link in appropriate places where people already interact with you, such as a professional profile, portfolio, or email signature.
Final thoughts
Your online identity does not have to be scattered across unrelated profiles and links. A simple personal website can give people one useful place to learn who you are, what you do, and where they can find your work.
Carrd makes it possible to create that starting point without coding or paying for a domain immediately.
Begin with accurate information, a clear purpose, and a page that is easy to use. You can improve the design and expand your online presence as your needs grow.
